# Governance

> Audit trail, data retention, field access, and IP controls for your workspace.

**Governance** is the admin console for security and compliance, reached from the shield icon in the left rail. It opens on an overview of your workspace's security posture, with a set of controls alongside it.

## Audit trail

**Audit** is a record of who did what in your workspace: member changes, role changes, invites, and more. You can page through it and export it as a CSV for your records.

## Data retention

Under **Retention**, you set how long GainTrace keeps certain records before pruning them. The prune runs on a daily schedule, and you can also run it on demand.

## Field access

**Field policies** let you hide or redact sensitive fields for certain roles, so not everyone sees every value.

## Good to know

* Governance controls are for owners and admins.
* Field redaction currently applies to the People list, so treat it as a control for that surface for now.
